• Comprehensive treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies: Specialized in the standardized evaluation, radical resection, and multidisciplinary management of primary liver cancer, gallbladder cancer, cholangiocarcinoma (including hilar cholangiocarcinoma), pancreatic cancer, and periampullary tumors.
• Minimally invasive surgery for cholelithiasis and benign biliary diseases: Expertise in the minimally invasive treatment of complex biliary stones, including intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct stones and cholecystolithiasis combined with choledocholithiasis. Utilizes combined dual-scope and triple-scope techniques (laparoscopy, choledochoscopy, and ERCP) for gallbladder-preserving stone removal, bile duct exploration, and lithotripsy.
• Minimally invasive hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and splenic surgery: Experienced in performing technically demanding procedures, including laparoscopic hepatectomy, laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy, and laparoscopic splenectomy.
• Severe pancreatitis and portal hypertension: Extensive clinical experience in the comprehensive management of severe acute pancreatitis and surgical treatment of cirrhotic portal hypertension, including splenomegaly and gastrointestinal bleeding.

More than 40 years of clinical practice, with distinguished contributions to patient care, research, and medical education at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.

Academic Achievements

• Renowned expert in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Has performed more than 3,000 precision hepatectomies for liver cancer. Achieved 254 consecutive pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) cases without postoperative pancreatic fistula and has completed more than 1,000 Whipple procedures in total. Successfully performed pancreaticoduodenectomy without blood transfusion using a unique pancreaticojejunostomy technique known as Chen’s Anastomosis. Completed more than 1,000 surgeries for hilar cholangiocarcinoma with an excellent/good outcome rate of 98%.
• Highly experienced in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. Since 2000, has performed more than 200 liver transplants. In 2001, pioneered and independently completed the first orthotopic liver transplantation at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Achieved an annual volume of more than 100 liver transplant cases, with a 100% surgical success rate and a one-year survival rate of 80%, including transplantation in a recipient aged 70 years.
• Possesses advanced expertise in vascular surgery. Since 2006, has performed complex vascular procedures, including open repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms and iliac artery aneurysms using prosthetic grafts. Since 2018, has led the cardiovascular surgery team in performing open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, significantly advancing the hospital’s vascular surgery program. Has completed nearly 100 open abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs and introduced three major technical innovations.
• Pioneered the multidisciplinary team (MDT) model for colorectal cancer liver metastases in Guangdong Province. As Head of the Metastatic Liver Cancer Group of the Hepatobiliary Branch of the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association, established and organized the hospital’s MDT program for metastatic liver cancer in 2016, integrating expertise from hepatobiliary surgery, gastroenterology, radiology, pathology, oncology, and related specialties. Has overseen more than 500 MDT consultations.
